How to play punto banco

The most common version of baccarat today is punto banco, which is played in Australia, Asia, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. It is also the standard format for Internet baccarat.

The object of punto banco is to correctly predict which of two hands will score the highest: the banker (banco), or the player (punto). You can also bet on the tie, which pays when both hands draw the exact same score.

The points system for baccarat is a little different to other tables games, such as blackjack. Cards are scored like so:

  • Ace = one point
  • Deuce through Nine = face value (i.e. Seven = seven points)
  • 10, Jack, Queen, King = zero points

The other quirk is that whenever a hand reaches or exceeds 10 points, only the second digit of the total score counts. So if the player hand has two Sevens, for instance, the score counts as four points rather than 14.

The exact run of play in punto banco baccarat depends on the value and make-up of each hand (i.e. each move depends on both the player’s cards and the banker’s cards). Gamblers don’t really need to know these rules, however; the croupier follows a strict script regarding when to draw and when to stay, so we are but spectators once we place our bets.

Once the dealer finishes each hand, bets are settled according to whichever scores the highest. The chart below shows the payout odds and house edge for player bets, banker bets and tie bets in a standard eight-deck game.

Wager Payout House edge
Player 1 to 1 1.24%
Banker 19 to 20 1.06%
Tie 8 to 1 14.36%

Even though the house takes a five per cent commission on banker bets (which is why it pays 0.95 to 1 rather than 1 to 1), an expected return of just under 99 per cent makes it one of the best punts in the whole casino. The player hand is also good value, compared to most table games, while the tie wager is a classic sucker bet which ramps up the house edge by more than 13 per cent.

Online baccarat games

The real money casinos above stock games by the world’s most trusted gambling software developers, which means you can expect outstanding quality, performance and security whenever you play baccarat online. We’ve featured the most popular titles below, listed by provider.

Microgaming

There is no casino software brand more revered than Microgaming, which has been developing blue-ribbon online gambling products since 1994. The British company’s stellar collection of Internet baccarat games includes:

Gold Series Baccarat – The Microgaming Gold Series is renowned for its upscale graphics and silky smooth gameplay, and Baccarat Gold is no exception. Bet up to $500 per hand on this interactive punto banco release, which allows you to squeeze and flip the cards as you would on a traditional ‘big baccarat’ table in a land-based casino.

Microgaming Baccarat – The oldest of MG’s baccarat titles still ranks among its most popular online table games. This is a no-nonsense release with simple features and a $40 bet limit ($100 at some casinos), which is ideal for new players and those with limited bankrolls.

High Limit Baccarat – If you want a simple, frills-free baccarat game with a bit more wagering room, then Microgaming High-Limit Baccarat is a very solid choice. It looks and plays just like the standard version, except you can stake up to $500 per hand.

Live Dealer Baccarat – The Microgaming live casino allows you to play with real cash, in real time, with real croupiers and real playing cards. Three different live baccarat formats – including Turbo Baccarat and the super sexy Playboy Live Baccarat – provide a smorgasbord of authentic gambling options at a variety of bet levels.

Net Entertainment

If Microgaming is king of the hill when it comes to digital casino games, then Net Entertainment is the crown prince. The Professional Series titles come in two versions – Baccarat Pro and Punto Banco Pro – which each offer three selectable bet limits:

  • Standard Baccarat – $1 minimum, $100 maximum
  • Low Stakes Baccarat – $0.10 minimum, $10 maximum
  • High Stakes Baccarat – $10 minimum, $1000 maximum

So whether you are new to real money gambling and want to start out with silver coins, or you’re serious high-limit casino player who wants the freedom to bet hundreds of dollars her hand, the NetEnt Professional Series games offer something for every baccarat enthusiast.

Evolution Gaming

Sign in it at one of our top-ranked no download casinos, and the live dealer section will almost certainly feature games developed and run by these guys. Evolution Gaming offers two different versions of live punto banco:

Baccarat Live – There’s nothing standard about Evolution’s entry-level live baccarat tables. The decor is inviting, the gameplay is authentic and the dealers are first class, while HD video streaming makes you feel like you’re right there in the flesh. Affordable $1/$250 bet limits provide something for casuals and lifers alike.

VIP Live Baccarat – For the most sophisticated and exclusive live dealer casino experience, you can’t go past Evolution’s VIP Baccarat Live. You get all the quality and functionality of the standard Baccarat Live tables, but with that extra touch of class that comes with a $2/$1000 bet limit.

Ezugi

Another of Europe’s leading live dealer developers, Ezugi offers a top-shelf live baccarat game that caters to a wide variety of players. It is available in both English-speaking and Spanish-speaking versions, and comes with a number of side bets for those who like that extra little thrill:

  • Perfect Pair – 25 to 1
  • Player Pair – 11 to 1
  • Banker Pair – 11 to 1
  • Either Pair – 5 to 1
  • Small – 1.5 to 1
  • Big – 0.54 to 1

BetSoft

While better known for its trend-setting collection of online 3D pokies, BetSoft has also carved out a very solid reputation for its simple yet highly entertaining table games. BetSoft Baccarat’s straightforward layout means it is dead easy to play and takes but a second or two to load up, while a $1/$100 betting limit is enough to keep most online punters happy.
